Going to Press!
Many thanks to everyone who helped with this year’s 2023 Report to the Community. This year’s Report brought in about $38,000 in ads, short of our goal but still respectable. All profits will go directly to our service projects in the next Rotary year.
A huge thanks to Cindi Viviano, John Hornor, and Paul Keely for their work on the ad campaign; to Doug Rainey and Robin Broomall for editorial work; to Bill Sullivan for his photography; and most especially to all members who sold or purchased ads and/or made personal contributions.
District Grant for 2023-24
Utilizing resources with Mandella Fellows from 2022, we will be submitting a district grant application to supply menstrual kits to young ladies in Nigeria, with Doris, Evelyn, and Robin leading the project. Doris has already made contact with one Fellow, identified a local Rotary club to assist, and has one physician Rotarian to help with the project. Many young girls are not attending school one week per month because they do not have menstrual supplies. When the application is initially completed, we will share with the members for any additional ideas or suggestions.
Supporting Tornado Victims
Our Board of Directors approved a $2,000 donation to Disaster Aid USA for the Mississippi Tornado Disaster Relief. DAUSA is a non-profit supported entirely of Rotarians with 100% of donations going to disaster relief. When the Red Cross leaves after offering blankets and bottles of water, DAUSA teams reach out to the Rotary District Governor for the region, ask what is needed, access the situations, then form a plan of action helping to do the heavy cleanup and rebuild communities.
Adopting a Future Playground
Our Board of Directors recently approved our club being sponsors of the soon-to-be-built Old Papermill Road Playground through the city’s Adopt A Park program. When construction is completed later this year, we will schedule regular trash pickup, monitoring of equipment for potential repairs, and reporting any issues we see happening. We got our name in there before another local club!
Rotaract, Interact, Satellite, Corporate, IMPACT clubs
What is the difference? How do they work? Who are the members?
Rotaract is a college or community club of members up to 32 years old. They are legit clubs recognized by Rotary International. We are co-sponsors with the Wilmington Rotary of the Rotaract club at UD.
Interact is a high-school level club that is sponsored by a Rotary club. We sponsor the Global Leadership class at Newark Charter. Next Fall we look forward to sponsoring a club at Aspira Academy, too.
Satellite clubs are sponsored by Rotary club, often starting with 8 or more members. They do not meet with the regular club but have their own agenda and service projects. They are members of their sponsoring club until they grow to 20 or more and then can become their own Rotary club. We do not have a satellite club (yet!)
Corporate clubs are Rotary clubs whose members all work at the same company. They are chartered and act as a regular Rotary club.
IMPACT clubs are new. With a minimum of eight, their members are considered members of the sponsoring Rotary club but they have their own leadership, agenda, and service projects. They decide when, where, or even if, they should meet. They are different from a satellite club in that they have no desire to become their own Rotary club. Last week or club’s Board of Directors voted to approve an IMPACT club if there is a group ready to start. If we have an IMPACT club, it would be the first in our district. (Stay tuned!)
Ladies of NMRC
Last week the Ladies of NMRC, along with two guests and three female spouses of other club members and an Honorary Lady (!), met for a Happy Hour and packed the next round of 50 Birthday Boxes. They are planning another service project for next month. They are on a roll!
