Since 2015, Newark Morning Rotary Club has paid tribute to service men and women, and heroes of all kinds, with a public display of American flags timed with Veterans Day.
Flags for Heroes is a fundraising initiative that recognizes heroes of all kinds with a moving display of hundreds of flags that welcome passers-by to walk-through, read hero names on medallions, and consider their own heroes.
The initiative culminates with a moving ceremony bringing together dignitaries, honorees, and the public for a moving 30-minute service. Signs posted throughout the area share the names of event sponsors and supporters.
This year’s ceremony is Sunday, November 8 at 11:00am. All are welcome.

To date, Flags for Heroes has raised over $146,000. In 2025, $31000 was raised with 100% directed back to support the organizations listed below.
- AETNA Hose Hook and Ladder – provides fire, rescue, and EMT services to the Greater Newark area
- Stop Soldier Suicide – Mental health support for Vets
- Newark PAL – support for the mobile PAL unit
- Stockings for Soldiers – sends personalized Christmas stockings to deployed troops
- Wreaths Across America – a way to honor our Vets who have given the ultimate sacrifice
- Healing Waters – Fly fishing: healing for disabled Vets
- Heroes Scholarship – annual scholarship – 2024
- Delaware Military Museum – general support
- USO Delaware – supports America’s service members and families stationed in Delaware
- Delaware Military Academy – charter school based on traditions, values and ideals of U.S. Navy
- Veteran Watchmakers Initiative – provides veterans with watchmaking skills, support and employment referrals
