$1million reached!
It took 26 years, but we finally hit the $1 million mark for the Report To Our Community! With the $40,000 in ads and donations this year, we can finally claim to bring in the first million that supports our community. Thank you to the team, chaired by Cindi Viviano, for all you hard work and hours of commitment. And a huge thank you to everyone who sold ads. It could not have happened without YOU!
Flag Money Disbursed
What a way to celebrate! Last week the $27,950 collected through the Flags For Heroes 2024 was distributed to the following organizations:
$5,000 – Beds4Vets (last year we supported 5 Delaware families with household items)
$5,000 – Stop Soldier Suicide (the need to help those who made the ultimate service continues every day!)
$2,000 – Newark PAL (our money goes to support their social media, website, and new mascot)
$2,000 – Stockings For Soldiers (will help with shipping costs for customized Christmas stockings)
$2,000 – Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder (supporting their internship program)
$2,000 – USO Delaware (assist families of deployed)
$1,000 – Delaware Military Museum (assist in telling the history of Delaware soldier action)
$1,250 – Delaware Military Academy (supports marksmanship training and competition)
$1,200 – Healing Waters (support vets with mental and physical disabilities through fly fishing)
$250 – donation to Vinnie (for National Anthem during FFH ceremony)
$250 – donation to Patriot Guard (for assistance during FFH ceremony)
$2,000 – Wreaths Across America (support of holiday decorations at Bear Veterans Cemetery)
$1,000 – Veterans Watchmaker Initiative (trains vets in the lost art of watch making and repair)
Balance of money to support $2,000 scholarship and future Chair of Honor.
Workers United!
Thank you to members who assisted IMPACT club in packing hygiene kits for homeless on April 8. Bags are now being distributed to those who are in need and found panhandling along roadways. Last Saturday there was a roudy group working at the Food Bank, filling bags of weekend meals for school kids. 336 bags were filled in less than two hours by 7 Rotarians, 3 spouses, and a handfull of Food Bank volunteers. The Food Bank bags are distributed to more than 1000 schools in Delaware for kids on free or reduced lunch so that they can have something to eat on weekends when they can’t get free breakfast and lunch at school.
Update on District Grant Project
Our project for this year is about Empowering Girls (and guys). Part one is to provide 100 hygiene kits for low income and homeless girls at each of the five high schools. All 500 kits have been packed and delivered to Newark, Glasgow, and Christiana High School, as well as packed by Interact students at Newark Charter on March 10 and Aspira students will complete packing on May 9. Emergency clothes closet items will also be provided to the five school nurses.
Reusable water bottles will also be distributed to the 5 high schools as well as given as donated as give aways at the two capstone projects at NCHS and Aspira. It will be a good advertisement for our club.
Part Two is an educational/sustainability component that will be conducted by the two Interact groups. Aspira students in Lisa Westerfield’s class chose Human Trafficking and Self Defense and will hold a schoolwide Awareness program on May 9. Robin has been working with the five students to assemble speakers on human trafficking and get someone to demonstrate self defense. They will also have volunteers pack their 100 hygiene kits. Can we make a point to attend? They will need our support. Details will be sent.
Newark Charter Interact students will also participate in a school program with a table for information on that same night. Can anyone attend to show our support?
Next District Grant
Our next application for a district grant will be the meal packing project with Rise Against Hunger. Robin, Ed Gossett, and Jamie Zingaro attended the District’s Grant Management Seminar on Saturday to make our club eligible to apply for a grant. Not only will this provide 10,000 meals for school groups in an under privileged country, it will provide an opportunity to introduce youth to service. Our two Interact classes and IMPACT members will be invited to participate as well as Bill Sullivan’s students.
Nominations being Accepted
If you want to nominate a fellow member or yourself for 2nd vice president, secretary, treasurer, or Sgt at Arms for the 2025-2026 Rotary year, please submit the name(s) to Robin. Elections will be formally held at the June 12 meeting. The positions of president, president elect, and 1st vice president are already secured for next year.
