Thank you, Dave Bonk, for your efforts to get the Chair of Honor in place and dedicated last week. It was a moving ceremony. And thank you to those who sponsored Flags last year so we could afford to do this project to honor and always remember our POW’ and MIA’s.

The Green at UD was busy and our flags were flying high last Sunday as the community members and organizations came out of the woodwork to meet and greet each other. We talked with MANY of our friends and neighbors, shared info on our Flags For Heros project, welcomed many to visit our meetings, and gave out 200 little flags to kids and adults. Thank you to those who helped that day.

We will volunteer at the Food Bank of Delaware on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9-12 a.m. You must register on the Food Bank site at FBD.org to sign up as a volunteer. Adopt A Highway – Saturday, Oct. 4, 8-9 a.m. Sign up with Dan Seador. Anyone who volunteers gets makeup credit for any missed meeting.

Remember the success of last year’s Flags For Heroes event? Clinton’s goal for this year is even greater – $30,000! That means we need sponsors and individual flags sold. Reach out to your business, vendors, friends and neighbors with the opportunity to participate. Many locals say they didn’t know about the flags until reading about it in the Newark Post until IT WAS OVER! They were disappointed the flags were down. Let’s make them aware earlier this year. Cindi and Clinton have printed flyers or get one on our website nmrde.org. Just remember what we were able to do with the proceeds – support our veterans, first responders, and youth programs. The Chair of Honor is in construction mode and will be dedicated on Sept. 18, 5:30 at the City of Newark building. .

It’s dictionary time! We give free student dictionaries to third grades in school around Newark. Lynn Mey and Mike Laur are co-chairs of the project. Mike has more than 800 dictionaries in his office waiting for YOU to tell Lynn Mey that you will be a contact person for one of our selected schools. As the contact person for that school, you call the school secretary for number of third graders enrolled, then arrange delivery to each third grade classroom. You need day, time, and ask for10-15 minutes per classroom for short presentation. Then you will pick up the cases from Mike’s office, put in the labels, and notify the club asking for volunteers to assist in delivery and presentations. If you’ve never done this before, volunteer to help! It’s a great day when you make the kids smile!

Thank you, Cheryl Ernst and Paul Keely, for getting the latest Rotaract club moving forward at UD. All Rotary forms have been completed, signed, and approved. Now we wait for UD’s final approval. We met several of the members at Community Day and they are excited to get established and begin their service projects.
