July 18, 2019     Rotary Connects the World!

July 11 program:

Lee Murphy has had an interesting career, starting with teaching school for pennies, to working on the tracks for the railroad at twice the salary as a teacher, and later being conductor and locomotive engineer for the Northeast Corridor of Amtrak. His latest venture is an acting career, in television and movies. He was Sec. of Defense in House of Cards and has appeared in many commercials.  Living and working in New York City has been an experience, as the cast on his leg is a story in itself!

Mystery Lunch Tour

Join us for a tour of the lovely countryside in all it’s summer glory while headed to a mystery destination for lunch! We will assemble in the back of Courtyard parking lot on Saturday, July 20 at about 12:15 where you will receive driving instructions to our lunch destination. At 12:30 the first car will leave, with others going about 5 minutes apart. No one knows where we are headed until you see the final clue. Hints: have a good navigator with you and have a full tank of gas!

Dress will be casual. Please be prepared to pay for your meal there (most expensive lunchtime meal is about $25)

Seating will be limited, so please sign up with Robin if you want to attend.

New RI President’s Message:

RI President Mark Daniel Maloney’s theme for 2019-20, Rotary Connects the World, asks Rotarians to strengthen the many ways that Rotary Connects the World, building the connections that allow talented, thoughtful, and generous people to unite and take meaningful action through Rotary service. You can find his full message at rotary.org. Or just Google RI theme2019-2020.

Mandella Fellows at UD

Another group of Washington Mandella Fellows has arrived at UD for about six weeks of leadership training.

We will have the Mandella Fellows at the Thursday, July 18 Rotary meeting. They will each have an opportunity to pitch their personal project, with the winner receiving $500. Don’t miss this exciting day! Be aware the meeting might last past 8:15. If you need to leave, it is not a problem.

President Evelyn would like three members to be judges of the Pitch contest. If you can stay after the meeting, please let Evelyn know that you will be a judge.

New make up rules!

Starting with July 1, every Rotarian has a chance for 100% attendance for the next year!!! The new changes made at the Rotary International’s Council on Legislation eliminate the rule for makeups for missed meetings where you had to make up two weeks before to two weeks after a missed meeting in order to get credit for a make up. Now a make up can be applied to ANY missed meeting for the whole year. If you attend another club’s meeting, a Rotary supported event or activity, a club Board meeting, a club committee meeting, or any other business connected to Rotary, that will qualify as a makeup for a missed meeting. You will not get credit on your invoice unless you show receipt for attending a Rotary meeting. Be sure to let Secretary Doug Gordon know you attended the event so he can give you credit.

Committee chairs and Event/Project Chairs – please give Doug Gordon a list of members who attended or participated in your activity or meeting so he can give them credit.

Let’s make this a 100% attendance year!!!
