February 21, 2019     Be An Inspiration!

Feb. 14 program:

Classifications talks about new members reveal a lot about them!

Jamie Zingaro was born in Elwood City, just outside of Pittsburgh. Ever since he was a kid, he wanted to be a marine biologist. But one course in Marine Biology at Gannen University in Erie, Pa. cured him of that! He graduated in 1984 with a degree in Ecology. Today he is a 30-year associate as part of the communications team in charge of the intranet at W. L. Gore and Associates. He enjoys being outdoors gardening, running, hiking and biking.

Stewart Lee comes from Baltimore from  a culturally diverse family, with a father who is Chinese and mother who is American. He always wanted to be a doctor and majored in Chemistry at University of Virginia. But Stewart describes himself as the poster child for not getting a job in his college major. He is a community banker at Howard Bank, probably the only community banker in the country with a degree in chemistry. He likes golfing, running, going to sporting events and many concerts..

Register at www.rli33.org and pay the $95 registration fee, then give your receipt to Shawn for reimbursement. Breakfast and lunch are included. Food packing event a Blast!!!

Schedule your March 30 Saturday morning for fun, fellowship, and helping others less fortunate. A Rise Against Hunger meal packaging event will be held in our rooms at the Courtyard. In a very specific assembly line, we will pack 10,500 meals to be sent to areas of the world that are in need, in schools, orphanages, and communities where food is not easy to obtain.  We need 50 volunteers (Rotarians, family members, high school students, college students, and community members) to help. About 10 are needed at 8:30 to help unload the truck, 50 are needed to sign in at 9:30 to help with the packaging, about 10 are needed to help cleanup and reload the truck. We should be all done and out by noon. Please sign up with Robin for a great memorable event!

Feb. 7 program:

Imagine having to go to court and face your adversary. Now imagine having to do it wthout a lawyer. Legal Services of Delaware and Combined Campaign For Justice help ensure people get access to justice regardless of their education level or inability to pay. Douglas Canfield, executive director of Legal Services, says having an attorney determines your outcome. The Services help more than 12,000 people each year, with 85% of them living under the federal poverty guidelines. Even with that many being helped, the 26 lawyers can help only 20% of those in Delaware who need help. Due to budget liitations, close to 20,000 people go unserved each year. The courtroom door are closed to those without an attorney.

Weekly bulletin 2/7/2019

Jan. 31 program:

The best Rotary clubs are ones that are organized. Our President Elect Evelyn Hayes has worked to get our committees functioning and reporting regularly to the club. Here was the first round of reports:

Membership: Paul Keely has assembled a crack team to work on recruiting, retention, and outreach to the other Newark area clubs. A Rotary Discovery Night will be held April 24, 5:30 – 6:30 to introduce prospective members to Rotary.

Foundation: Fred Dawson highlighted how we give to the Rotary Foundation. We are one of the few clubs who reach $100 per capital every year, with every member contributing. Our all time giving to TRF is $241,000.

Fundraising: Cindi Viviano reported we have $17,000 so far in ads sold for the 2019 Report to the Community. Reach out to her for help as needed.

Scholarships: Clinton has led the charge for the last four years in scholarships to James H. Groves Adult High School. In four years we have awarded $30,000.

Administration: Robin reported on the roll out of the new club website. Thank you, Paul K., for the many hours you devoted to this. There are a few items still to be added. The weekly club bulletin will now be available online at https://nmrde.org.

Jan. 24 program:

What an inspiration to see our grant dollars at work! Three of the Little Masters Players entertained us with their musical prowess as a result of our $11,000 grant to supply students from under served communities with musical instruments of their own along with lessons from UD music program students. In February a second round of students will get their instruments. Thank you, Michael Luck for overseeing this grant.

We also got to say goodbye to two long time members. Mary Konwinski will be relocating to North Carolina and Gene Dannemann will be moving to Glen Mills, Pa. We will miss both of you.

And our fond remembrances of Steve Amick brought tears to our eyes. Steve was a charter member and will always be in our hearts.

Founded in 1996, Fresh Start is the non-profit arm of Wilmington Women in Business, providing scholarships to local women with financial need. Current President Sarah Kenney-Cruz explained how many women could advance their careers if they had the necessary education. The organization started with just one scholarship and 20 years later more than $950,000 has been awarded. In addition to financial support, they provide mentors and support to help the women get their degrees. More than 90% of donations to Fresh Start go directly to scholarship recipients.

Hip Hip Horray! It’s that time of year!!! The Kickoff to the 2019 Report to the Community is officially underway!
Jim Streit was the brains behind the “one and only annual BIG fundraiser” for our club. We saw other clubs selling raffle tickets, Christmas trees, fruit baskets, pizza kits, etc. and declaired we would not do that. As publisher of the Newark Post, Jim got us started on a journey that is now in its 20th year. The first year we raised about $5,000. Last year we raised $57,000. And who knows what we can do this year. Under Cindi’s guidance, let the sales begin!!!

Weekly Bulletin – 1/10/19

Jan. 3 program:
The best kept secret in the Federal government is the Office For Victims of Crime, according to a former employee Dennis Greenhouse. It was started in the early 1980’s by President Ronald Reagan through the Victims of Crimes Act (VOCA) to directly reimburse victims or their families for counseling, medical expenses, funeral expenses and other expenses occurred as a result of a violent crime against them. The money goes to the states. In Delaware, the attorney general has the authority to disburse the money. The Victims Advocate office helps them through the court process. In 2018 Delaware spent $1.2m in compensation and $10m in assistance.

Dec. 20 program:
The Blue Hen Veterans and Friends has helped to elevate the importance of supporting veterans both inside and outside the university setting. As a non- profit organization, under the leadership of Ken Jones, it supports the University of Delaware’s student-run Blue Hen Veterans by raising money for the Face of America bike ride. Last year more than 650 bike riders, many of them in recumbent bikes or pedaling by hand, rode the 110 miles over two days from Arlington to Gettysburg. The Friends group has raised $56,000 in the last five years to purchase recumbent bikes, provide transportation and support logistics for the rides. Their efforts have also raised awareness and support of veterans returning to classes at UD.

A Message for the Season

Peace will come when people live
In friendship, side by side,
And cherish understanding
More than hatred, greed, and pride.

Peace will come when people see
All people as the same,
And no one has to live in fear,
In ignorance or shame.

Peace will come when people
Who are needy can reach out
For shelter, food, or love,
And no one has to do without.

Peace will come when people
Learn to listen and to care
About the rights and dignity
Of people everywhere.
Peace will come when love and trust
And kindness know rebirth,
And on that day all people
Will rejoice in peace on earth.

Amanda Bradley

May all that this season means be an inspiration to you throughout the coming year
