Rotary International President Olayinka Babalola’s 2026-27 Presidential Message –

YouTube:  https://youtu.be/Zs_aZxR-mK8?si=VWu33vBm2KiMC1rB

RI President Yinka,  a member of the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi, Nigeria, describs how joining a Rotaract club as a teenager enlarged his perspective beyond the limited, privileged outlook he’d once had. That change in awareness came from observing the lasting impact his club had in the community, particularly from teaching people to read and write.

“As members of Rotary, we share a vision of a better future,” he said. “To make this vision a reality, we must acknowledge and unleash the change within ourselves. We must focus not only on outcomes, but on impact.”

Change and impact are not the same, he added: “Change is only the beginning. Impact is what endures.”

Read his story in the July issue of Rotary Magazine. On page 1 you can read his first message to us to be Better than your Best!

Bob has extra copies of the 2026 Report to Our Community. Pick up at his office or he can bring to meeting for you.
Simone Minor, our Global Grant Scholarship recipient, will visit us on July 23. Plan on being here!

Support for Global Grant Scholarship
The application for supporting a scholarship for Simone Minor, a graduate from UVa and a Bear, Del resident has been appoved by The Rotary Foundation!
Simone has been accepted at Kings College in London to study Maternal and Child Health, one of the areas of focus of Rotary. Because Simone lives in our area, our club had been asked to be the lead club of the global grant application. All clubs and members in our district 7630 are asked to pledge to support this grant. So far more than $30,000 has been pledged. Our club has agreed to $1,000 to support her with several members making personal pledges of nearly $2,000.
At a Distict Foundation Committee meeting yesterday, it was suggested that since the application has been approved by The Rotary Foundation, EVERYONE WHO PLEDGED TO SUPPORT THE SCHOLARSHIP CAN NOW MAKE THEIR PLEDGED CONTRIBUTION TO THE ANNUAL FUND BEFORE THEN END OF JUNE. If you need help in making the contribution online, please ask Robin, Marie, or Clinton for help. You will get a notice from PDG Bill Ferguson about making that actual donation NOW!

Busy Year!
This Rotary year from July 2025 to today has been a busy one with additions, subtractions and changes. But one thing is certain – we were busy making an impact on our community. When the 2026 Report to Our Community is on the website, please read pages 8 and 9 very carefully. If you think we don’t have an impact or can’t see what we do, this should make you proud to be a member of Newark Morning Rotary!

Saying Good bye!

It was not without a lot of thought and a heartwrenching decision, Barry Baker has decided to resign from Rotary due to health reasons. He still wants to stay in touch and know what we are up to! Barry has been a member of the Newark club and rejoined Newark Morning in December 2000. Every time we pick up trash from Old Baltimore Pike, we will remember Barry’s history lessons on Old Post Road and the Redcoats who marched from Ellkton to Cooch’s Bridge to begin the Revolutionary War.
Lynn Mey has also made the hard decision to resign. As past president, Lynn showed leadership and organization of a sometimes roudy bunch of Rotarians. She is now herding her bunch of 10 (soon to be 11) grandkids with many days of babysitting and family obligations.
Going to PRESS!!!!!!
It’s been a long time coming but we are finally going to press with the 2026 Report to Our Community!!!!! Many thanks to those who sold ads, made donations, wrote articles, took pictures, and answered Robin’s requests for updated pics and bios. We could not have done this without Chair Cindi Viviano and her team of Ed Gossett, John Hornor, Stewart Lee, and Robin. We did not hit our goal but $35,000 in advertising sales is not too shabby for the fundraiser. Congratulations to all.

Please confirm with Clinton Tymes your current email address. He is now sending invoices via email with 30 day reminders.
Changes in Annual Meeting
Instead of an Annual Meeting with dinner and awards, a new agenda will begin this year. Installation of officers for 2026-27 will be held at the morning meeting on June 11. Only internal awards to our club will be presented. The three awards usually presented( Community Service, Public Service, and Spirit in Business) will be presented individually at later meetings. This will give opportunity to highlight each award recipient rather than giving them a mere 30 seconds like we used to do.
Award Applications Available
Applications for the three special awards  we present each year are  now available. Please review each application and submit any nominees you have to the Rotarian who is the chair and named at the end. They will then review the applications with their committee, select one, and a meeting will be scheduled to present the award. Applications will be sent this week. No Rotarian is eligible for these awards but their business could be considered for the Spirit in Business award.

May 19 – 6-8 p.m. Volunteer at Dream Center

Welcome !

We are so fortunate to have Stella Patino and Dr. Nelson Atehortua joining our forces. They are both Rotarians relocating from Mississippi. After searching around for a new home club, they found us. Welcome!
Zach Harris is also joining us! He has been actively engaged by creating an app that will help our many small food pantry volunteers talk to each other and share resources as well as food. Welcome, Zach!
Support for Global Grant Scholarship
Members received an email from District Governor Dale Kerns about supporting a scholarship for Simone Minor, a soon to be graduate from UVa. A Bear, Del. resident, Simone has been accepted at Kings College in London to study Maternal and Child Health, one of the areas of focus of Rotary. Because Simone lives in our area, our club has been asked to be the lead club of the global grant application. All clubs and members in our district 7630 are asked to pledge to support this grant. Our club has agreed to $1,000 to support her with several members making personal pledges of nearly $2,000.
Adopt A Park Cleanup Scheduled
To get more members engaged and be mindful of their schedules, Dan Seador has a monthly signup for trash pickup at the Resevoir, Preston’s Playground, and the new Old Paper Mill Road Park. Each month will have a co-chair who will schedule a team to do the trash pickup, report back to Dan, and take pictures. The signup will be attached in an email to all members. Please reply to Dan.

Nominations Now Being Accepted
Our club has always been successful in having a long line of succession of leadership. Some clubs do not have a president elect until right before the new Rotary year begins in July. The Nomination committee (Robin, Shawn, and Don) are now accepting nominations for 2nd. vice president in 2026-27 (becoming club president in July 2029). If you want to be considered, please see Robin for more info.

Tomatoes, Tomatoes!
Eight member worked Saturday afternoon sorting tomatoes, not canned varieties, the real thing, fresh and some past their prime! Pallets full of cases of tomatoes and huge red and yellow peppers were sorted and bagged for clients of the Food Bank. Two hours of our work will be appreciated by those who have food insecurity! Join us next time and you will have a better appreciation of what it means to not have enough food to make dinner for your family!

THANK YOU!
A huge thank you to our 15 members who participated in one way or another to the District 7630 Conference this past weekend. I heard  nothing but positive comments from attendees. Fred, Paul, Shawn, Laurie, Elaine, Ann, Cheryl acted as sergeant at arms; Bob was driver and escort for keynote speaker as well as a breakout presenter; Dan and Clinton were extra helpers; Ed was the AV man; Jamie was the s/s applicant escort; Mark sang in the Memorial Service;  Jim B just did what I told him to do! Items for the giveaway bags were donated by Paul, Laurie, Ed, Fred, Cindi and Marie. The back issues of Rotarian magazine went in the 48 Birthday Boxes packed that morning. DG Dale Kerns is most appreciative for our help in acting as the “home club” since it took place in our area. It was a long 18 months for the Conference Committee from searching for the venue to embarking the bus for the Blue Rocks game. Kudos to EVERYONE for your help and support.
