In support of our District Governor Hugh Dawkins’ Day of Service, hundreds of our fellow District 7630 Rotarians will work in 3 different locations to pack meals for those less fortunate. Unlike other meal packing events we have participated in where the meals are shipped to third-world countries, these meals will be distributed in our own region. We will work with Rotarians from our own area at the VFW Post 160 in North East, Md. PLEASE SIGN UP FOR 10 A.M.-NOON OR NOON – 2 P.M.. Sign up sheet is being passed around. Or let Robin know and she will add your name. Spouses, reliable children, friends, and neighbors are welcomed to help.

Dictionary time:

Mike Laur has ordered dictionaries for third graders at 8 local schools. When he receives the shipment, the following members will let Mike know the number needed, pickup from his office and get labels to put in each book.  Apparently the schools prefer we just drop off the cases of dictionaries and not enter the classrooms. West Park (Bob Cronin);  Downes (Margie Masino);  McVey (Mark sisk); Maclary (Eric Cannon); Brader (Paul Keely); Smith/Sterck (Fred Dawson); Newark Charter (Clinton Tymes)

Silent Auction Items Needed BEFORE SEPT. 27:

The World’s Greatest Silent Auction is ready for posting of auction items. Like last year, Mike Luck will list your donations to the on-line auction site for bidding to begin. Then we will have the items available for viewing at the World’s Greatest Meal at our meeting on Oct. 28. Donations can include gift baskets, gift cards, handmade items or services, business gifts, jewelry, artwork, etc. You can donate and also bid on items. All proceeds will go to PolioPlus program of The Rotary Foundation.

TIPS for Proper Introductions:

When introducing a speaker please be prepared to follow the following TIPS for a professional presentation:
T –Topic of today’s program. One simple sentence will do.
I – Importance. Why should everyone listen to the speaker?
P – Personal details. What are the credentials of the speaker related to today’s presentation?
S – Speaker’s name. This is the ONLY time you will say their name. Be sure you know how to pronounce correctly. Then welcome the speaker to the podium with an extended hand for handshake.

Our list of committed sponsors for Flags For Heroes is now at $10,500 with 160 flags! Let’s get to the next goal of $13,000.

Each level will be acknowledged on our website and social media,  have logo on banner at flag time, receive medallions for flags, and higher levels will receive additional ad space in our Report. See Polly if you, your business, or an acquaintance is interested.
Public Service Announcement:
Did you know a mandatory 10-digit dialing for Delaware phone numbers is effective on October 24, 2021?  Now you can begin updating all those phone numbers you have stored in your phone and they will go through with the 302 area code.. Starting Oct. 24, all Delaware phone numbers must include the 302 area code or they will not go through. Any land lines must dial 1-302-and the number. You can still dial 911 for emergency services without the 302 area code.

Happy New Year!!!

What other organization do you know of that has a complete change in its top leadership every year on the same day – and does not skip a beat in its humanitarian work around the globe? This year’s Rotary International President-elect Shekhar Mehta encourages members to be changemakers and announced that his theme for the 2021-2022 Rotary year is Serve to Change Lives. See his story in the July issue of Rotarian magazine.

Congratulations, Madame President!

We welcome Joyce Henderson as out newest president of NMRC!

See Robin if you need help.

Thank you, Donna, for your 23 years of faithful service.

Now that Donna Friswell and Les Becca are “happy homeowners” in Melbourne, Florida, Donna has submitted her letter of resignation from our club and will be joining the Cocoa Rotary Club as of July 1. She was a charter member, stepping up to assume presidency only six months into our club’s formation. She was an assistant governor, spent years on the district’s grant committee, headed work weekends at Camp Fairlee, and worked on many of our service projects over the years.  Anyone venturing to Cocoa or Orlando area is encouraged to get in touch with Donna and get a private tour of the area with our favorite “travel agent.”

Perfect Attendance? Easy peasy…

Did you know Rotary asks us to attend 100% of our club meetings – or makeupthose we cannot attend? Makeups are so simple.

Here are some suggested ways to get credit for missed meetings:

*attend another club meeting (and bring makeup slip back to give to secretary
Doug)
*attend a club committee meeting
*attend a district Rotary event
*go to Rotary Leadership Institute (see bulletin for details)
*attend a club Board meeting (8:15 on last Thursday of the month)
*work on a club project (i.e. highway cleanup, volunteer at Food Bank, etc.)
*volunteer at Project CURE on Feb. 29 (see bulletin for registering)
*be a reader at Newark Day Nursery (register with Read Aloud Delaware first)
*attend dinner at Ole’ Tapas (info to come soon)
*come to a Rotary club happy hour

Rotary International rules for 100% attendance are easier than ever now. Anycredit you get can apply to ANY missed meeting during the entire Rotary year.
No excuse for not having 100% attendance. If you are an event or project or committee chair, please let Sec. Doug know which members attended so they can get credit.

As an incentive, our Membership Committee will begin recognizing members who have perfect attendance EACH QUARTER with a special breakfast. Don’t miss out…..

Advance Your Rotary Knowledge

Rotary Leadership Institute is a program designed to help you more thoroughly appreciate what this organization is about and how you fit into it. An all-day session is held at Maple Dale Country Club in Dover on Saturday, April 4. If you are interested in attending level 1, 2, or 3, please go to www.rli33.org and register for that session. The registration fee is $95 – HOWEVER – for you it is Zero!!! Just pay the $95 registration fee when registering, then give your receipt to treasurer Shawn for full reimbursement. Our club understands the value of RLI participation and will pay your fee. So, get a full day of breakfast and lunch, education, fun and fellowship at no cost to you except for your time.

Can you READ?

The Newark Children’s Day Nursery, located only a mile from the Courtyard on Barksdale Road, is in need of readers to the children. Easy — go to Read Aloud Delaware, signup as a reader, designate Newark Day Nursery as your preferred location. Then you can make arrangements that suit your schedule. There is no charge for the background checks but you must have the form fpr fingerprinting. President Evelyn or Tom Minto has the forms.

Can you Sort?

On Saturday, Feb. 29, from 9 a.m. to noon, Evelyn Hayes, Michaek Luch and Robin Broomall worked with about 15 other Rotarians from Southern Pa. clubs to sort and pack donated medical supplies at Project C.U.R.E. in West Grove, Pa. In less than 3 hours we packed 40 Kits for Kids, including bandaids, gauze, safety pins, comb, toothbrushes, tissues, nail clippers, tweezers and scissors. We also sorted and packed sterile bandages, surgical drapes, and other needed supplies. In all we packed the equivalent of $4000 worth of supplies, filling two pallets. The most recent shipment from the West Grove center went to China via air for the coronavirus outbreak. The next container leaving West Grove will be headed to Nigeria this week. What a great place and  mission..

Don’t delay! Get swingin’ on your ad sales for the 2020 Report. Sales Manager Kelly Bachman distributed ad sheets, sample letters, and lists of potential advertisers.  Deadline for reserving ad space is Feb. 27. Deadline for getting all ad copy and payment submitted is March 12. Easiest way to get started is to do your own company ad. Remember – all profits go directly to line 540 in our budget for 2020-2021 – Community Service. Not one penny goes to administration or our member activities. When emailing Kelly with an ad, please put Business Name and Ad Size in the subject line. Email Kelly at kmbachman22@gmail.com or phone 299-9791.

Looking for next year’s grant project

Do you have a worthy project in mind that we can use for our grant project for 2020-2021? It should benefit the community through education, health, environment, or community development (very loosely defined!). Projects must begin and be completed in the 2020-2021 Rotary year. We usually target projects about $10,000. If you have an idea, talk to Robin about it and see if it fits the criteria. Remember – not all Rotary projects are global. Rotary works at home, too.

Outstanding invoice?

Do not let your quarterly invoice go unpaid. Either get a check to treasurer Shawn or go to www.NMRDE.org and pay via credit card.

If you want to have your contribution made directly to The Rotary Foundation by credit card (weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually) and not have it included on your quarterly club invoice, go to www.rotarydirect.org to sign up. Easy…..

Clothing for McVey Students

Many thanks to those who shopped for the 14 children from McVey School who were in need of new clothes. Nurse Marguerite Diehl made sure all clothes were distributed to the children we shopped for. She has often said the new clothes for these children do more than just keep them warm. Having new items make them feel more confident and boost their self esteem. Late member Betsy Manglass established the relationship with  Nurse Diehl in 2003 and we have  supported the school every year since then. Thank you, Bill McNabola, for continuing our relationship.

Weekly bulletin 2/7/2019

Jan. 31 program:

The best Rotary clubs are ones that are organized. Our President Elect Evelyn Hayes has worked to get our committees functioning and reporting regularly to the club. Here was the first round of reports:

Membership: Paul Keely has assembled a crack team to work on recruiting, retention, and outreach to the other Newark area clubs. A Rotary Discovery Night will be held April 24, 5:30 – 6:30 to introduce prospective members to Rotary.

Foundation: Fred Dawson highlighted how we give to the Rotary Foundation. We are one of the few clubs who reach $100 per capital every year, with every member contributing. Our all time giving to TRF is $241,000.

Fundraising: Cindi Viviano reported we have $17,000 so far in ads sold for the 2019 Report to the Community. Reach out to her for help as needed.

Scholarships: Clinton has led the charge for the last four years in scholarships to James H. Groves Adult High School. In four years we have awarded $30,000.

Administration: Robin reported on the roll out of the new club website. Thank you, Paul K., for the many hours you devoted to this. There are a few items still to be added. The weekly club bulletin will now be available online at https://nmrde.org.
