Weekly Bulletin – 1/17/19

Jan. 10 program:
Hip Hip Horray! It’s that time of year!!! The Kickoff to the 2019 Report to the Community is officially underway!
Jim Streit was the brains behind the “one and only annual BIG fundraiser” for our club. We saw other clubs selling raffle tickets, Christmas trees, fruit baskets, pizza kits, etc. and declaired we would not do that. As publisher of the Newark Post, Jim got us started on a journey that is now in its 20th year. The first year we raised about $5,000. Last year we raised $57,000. And who knows what we can do this year. Under Cindi’s guidance, let the sales begin!!!

Jan. 3 program:
The best kept secret in the Federal government is the Office For Victims of Crime, according to a former employee Dennis Greenhouse. It was started in the early 1980’s by President Ronald Reagan through the Victims of Crimes Act (VOCA) to directly reimburse victims or their families for counseling, medical expenses, funeral expenses and other expenses occurred as a result of a violent crime against them. The money goes to the states. In Delaware, the attorney general has the authority to disburse the money. The Victims Advocate office helps them through the court process. In 2018 Delaware spent $1.2m in compensation and $10m in assistance.

Dec. 20 program:
The Blue Hen Veterans and Friends has helped to elevate the importance of supporting veterans both inside and outside the university setting. As a non- profit organization, under the leadership of Ken Jones, it supports the University of Delaware’s student-run Blue Hen Veterans by raising money for the Face of America bike ride. Last year more than 650 bike riders, many of them in recumbent bikes or pedaling by hand, rode the 110 miles over two days from Arlington to Gettysburg. The Friends group has raised $56,000 in the last five years to purchase recumbent bikes, provide transportation and support logistics for the rides. Their efforts have also raised awareness and support of veterans returning to classes at UD.

A Message for the Season

Peace will come when people live
In friendship, side by side,
And cherish understanding
More than hatred, greed, and pride.

Peace will come when people see
All people as the same,
And no one has to live in fear,
In ignorance or shame.

Peace will come when people
Who are needy can reach out
For shelter, food, or love,
And no one has to do without.

Peace will come when people
Learn to listen and to care
About the rights and dignity
Of people everywhere.
Peace will come when love and trust
And kindness know rebirth,
And on that day all people
Will rejoice in peace on earth.

Amanda Bradley

May all that this season means be an inspiration to you throughout the coming year
