Program for Jan. 15
The Newark-Pomeroy Railroad that was active in our region from 1872 to 1928, hauling goods and passengers from Parksburg, PA., through Newark, and ending at Delaware City. During that era, there were numerous small rail lines, which were the primary way of moving products between villages and small towns. In our region, the primary items included anthracite coal, clay made from the feldspar mined here, and peaches. Passengers traveled by rail, too, but often at their own peril. According to Barbara Woodford, director of White Clay Creek State Park, unfortunately the Newark Pomeroy Line, which was 30 miles long and traversed the creeks 65 times, was doomed from the beginning because of the economic depression, steep winding route, and competition from other railroads and later automobiles. The "Pumpsie Doodle" line, as it was nick-named because it was soooo slow, was dismantled in 1928 but you can still find remains of the road bed and bridges throughout White Clay Creek State Park and into Pennsylvania.

Thought for the Week:

I’ve learned that even when I have pains, I don’t need to be one!

Can’t make our meeting?

I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.

All Rotarians are welcomed to attend another club’s meeting. Be prepared to pay for your meal and bring the makeup slip back to our secretary for attendance and invoice credit.
